Pre schools refer to pre-learning education establishments offering education to kids under five years. In most cases, children who attend preschool are between 3-5 years. Kindergartens, nursery schools, grade 0, preschools, pre-K, and pre-primary are some of the names commonly used to refer to these establishments. The idea of taking children to preschool began in the 19th century in the Kingdom of Hungary. Theresa Brunszvik, opened more than eleven child care establishments around that time in the kingdom. Soon, the idea of preschool became popular among members of the middle class and it spread throughout the kingdom. It later spread throughout Europe and then worldwide.

The first kindergarten to be established within the US was opened in Wisconsin in 1856. Students were taught in German at that time. However, the use of German stopped in 1860 when Peabody opened the first facility that taught children in English. Later in 1970, the first free kindergarten was opened by Conrad Poppenhusen. At this time, all preschools were privately financed until in 1873 when the first publicly financed preschool was opened in St. Louis.

Research indicates that the first few years after birth are very vital to the process of leaning in human beings. Absorption of knowledge during these early years is higher compared to later years. This is often attributed to the fact that the development of the brain is highest at this age. As such, quality preschools and preschool teachers positively impact the learning outcomes in the long-term.

The subjects covered and the modes of teaching used in various preschools vary a lot. However, there is uniformity in certain themes across all preschools. Some of the common themes are social personal, economic and emotional development, listening, play, communication, talking, self-help skills, mathematics awareness, creative and aesthetic development, literacy, and scientific thinking.

Different jurisdictions impose different standards on preschools. The standards are installed to govern different components of preschools such as class size, services, administration, curriculum, assessment, ratio of teacher to students, teacher-child interaction, standards, and classroom environment. Pupils of different ages are subjected to different curricular. Emphasis given to certain aspects of study vary from one facility to another.

The benefits of preschools to children has been met with a lot of controversy. There are researchers who say that education in preschool is beneficial, while others consider it detrimental. Another group of researchers consider this education both beneficial as well as detrimental in different ways. Benefits have been found in the area of reading and mathematics while negative impact is in social and cooperation skills.

There is enormous amount of ongoing research into determination of the importance of preschool in children. The research has resulted into the formulation of several different methods of teaching. Among the most common ones are Forest Kindergarten, Head Start, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia approach, HighScope, Bank Street, and Montessori. Most kindergartens specialize in one of the methods while others specialize in multiple methods.
