The practice of acupuncture has evolved a lot since 1972 when it started to be introduced into the United States. The introduction was caused by the visit of President Nixon to China in that year. The only form in which this practice is allowed in the US healthcare system is medical acupuncture, which is performed by MD doctors. Other practitioners are osteopathic physicians, which are holders of DO degrees and further qualifications.

At the moment, the United States has 23 states that allow MDs and DO to practice this system. Training is provided to doctors as part of conventional medical school training. The AAMA is an association of practitioners in this field. The association was chartered in 1987 so as to support and rectify the practice of acupuncturists trained as physicians. The membership of the AAMA is composed of DOs and/or MDs

One needs to give symptoms that are both physical and emotional. This information is collected through questionnaire and interviews.

After all relevant information is collected by medical history and symptoms, the acupuncturist goes ahead to perform their own examination. This is meant to find further symptoms. The practitioner examines the tongue, body complexion, coughs, pains, general behavior, and pulse. The pulse is usually tested at different parts of the body.
