Graduating from high school or passing your General Education Development examinations is the first step towards a career in medicine. While in high school, you should start paying serious attention to science subjects namely biology, chemistry, physiology and physics. Your performance in these units will help you determine whether you are prepared to study surgery. You are advised to take all the required tests for college admission and apply to various accredited institutions.

You need a degree in a relevant area. Medical schools do not have any major requirements, but it is important take up a science-related major. Ensure that you complete all your coursework in biology, physiology, mathematics, chemistry and English. It is advisable to maximize your performance in all the pre-medicine courses to increase your chances of passing your examinations. You also want to network with your professors just in case you require their recommendations later on.

Apply and seek acceptance to an accredited medical college. Basically, this is another four years of study that will now help you to realize your dreams. Before being accepted, you will have to take a Medical College Admission Test. Whatever you score on this examinations coupled with your undergraduate transcripts will help determine the acceptance of your application.

Most programs will take four year to complete and will earn you titles like Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. During your first two years of study, you can expect to be taught psychology, medical ethics and biochemistry among other pre-medical units. You will mostly take your lessons in both classroom and laboratory settings. Remember, your performance at this stage determines your chances to proceed to the next stage, which is crucial.

On graduating from the medical school and passing your examinations, the next step is to secure a residency program slot. These chances are normally very competitive and you may need to get recommended by your professors. Residencies differ in duration and can take up to eight years depending on your area of specialization. They involve working in hospitals while being supervised by other licensed doctors.

Apply to be licensed. You cannot practice legally in any medical field without being registered and licensed by the authorities. States have different regulations and licensing requirements and you should confirm what you need to do. What is common though is the need to take both written and practical tests such as the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination. You will have to be re-certified every 7 to 10 years.

Once you have all your paperwork in order, you can now start applying for jobs. A career in medicine can be both exciting and demanding but you get the chance to serve people with various injuries. You will find it satisfying to watch your patients walk away happy with the services you provide. To advance your skills, it is advisable to enroll for continual education programs.
